THE KU KLUX KLAN IN TENNESSEE
In May 1866, the Ku Klux Klan was founded in Pulaski, Tennessee by six educated, middle-class Confederate army veterans known as the Immortal Six. These six men named their fraternity the Ku Klux Klan. The name was derived from the Greek word, Kuklos meaning, A circle or band (of brothers).
The main ideas were to resist the South's Reconstruction movement and become the voice of the Conservative movement's answer to the North's Union League. No man was accepted into the fraternity without taking an oath, that they had never been members of the Union Army, the Union League, or the Republican Party,( an extremely liberal party at that time).
Late in 1866, the Klan revised its stance, to become the defenders of the Constitution of the United States and become the protector of widows and orphans of the Confederate dead. They also voted to support re-enfranchisement of ex-Confederates and uphold the South's constitutional rights.
In April 1867, during a state wide meeting of Klansmen at the Maxwell House Hotel, in Nashville, Tennessee, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest was elected as the Klan's first Grand Wizard.
During the early years of the organization, Klan activity was strongest in Southern and Western Tennessee.
During 1867 to 1871, the organization suffered a serious decline and was almost destroyed by President Ulysses S. Grant, the former Union army General. Grant's persecution of the Klan, coupled with his enforcement of the Civil Rights Act of 1871, brought about a slowing in growth and activity of the Klan.
In 1915, after nearly fifty years of inactivity, the Klan revived, at Stone Mountain, Georgia, which lead to a newfound interest in the Klan, bringing in the Klan's second era in Southern Tennessee and throughout the U.S.
Today, Tennessee is hard at work, recruiting members for the U.N.S.K. These members are active in their communities and churches. They strive to uphold the Constitution and are working against illegal immigration and many other things that plague this Country. Please join us in the fight!
